A team from the newly formed executive committee of the Association of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers (ANAME), led by President Engr. Saiful Islam, held an introductory meeting with Commodore Mohammad Maksud Alam(E), BSP, NUP, BCGM, BCGMS, ndc, psc, BN, the Director General of the Department of Shipping (DG-DOS), on January 8, 2025, at his office.
The team included Dr. Md. Reaz Hasan Khondoker (Member), Engr. Muin Uddin Zulfiquer (Member), Engr. Md. Monirul Islam (General Secretary), and Engr. Ataur Rahman (Senior Joint Secretary) of ANAME.
Additionally, Mar. Engr. Md. Monjurul Kabir, Chief Engineer and Ship Surveyor for the Department of Shipping, was present during the meeting.
At the outset, Cdre Maksud congratulated Engr. Saiful Islam and his new committee for assuming his responsibilities as President of ANAME and both individuals shared their memories from their time working together aboard in a naval ship in the Bangladesh Navy. Cdre Maksud expressed confidence on Engr. Saiful Islam’s leadership for fostering greater welfare within our maritime community.
During the meeting, the President of ANAME emphasized the need for strong collaboration between ANAME and the Department of Shipping to enhance safety, security, and sustainable practices in shipbuilding, shipping operations, and ship recycling initiatives. He assured his unwavering support from ANAME for any efforts undertaken by DOS aimed at advancing our motherland’s interests.
Following issues were discussed in the meeting:
a. Areas of collaboration opportunities between the Department of Shipping (DOS) and the Association of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers (ANAME), Bangladesh.
b. Recognition and authorization of the members of the Association of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers (ANAME), Bangladesh.
c. Job opportunity and job placement of Naval Architects in shipyards, dockyard and in Department of Shipping.
d. Formation of permanent Ship design approval cell and appointment of Chief Naval Architect.
e. Amendment of Gazette of Marine Surveyors and Inclusion of requirement and authorization of Naval architects.
f. Amendment of remuneration of the Panel Supervisors in the charter of responsibilities of Panel Supervisors.
g. Role and responsibility of ship designer and ship design house.
Both sides agreed that this type of meeting should be arranged in a regular interval for further development and enhancement of this sector.
